Writing Class:
Lesson 1:
Figurative Language:
Figurative language is EVERYWHERE! Especially ...in songs, poems and creative writing.
Examples from songs : " Baby, you're a firework" , " Times Square can't shine as bright as you", " The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside", " You know I would walk 1000 miles if I could just see you", " You know I would catch a grenade for you", " You a star just like Mariah"
The literal meaning is different than the figurative meaning.
Bonus : Try to guess which songs the lyrics above came from!!! Email Mrs.MH
Figurative language is used to give further meaning to writing...to make your words come alive.
Types of Figurative Language:
Hyperbole – exaggeration used to emphasize a point or to add excitement or humor.
Example: I can smell my mom’s brownies a mile away. I have a ton of homework. I’ve seen this movie a thousand times
Idiom – expression in which the intended meaning is different from the literal meaning.
Example: Don’t judge a book by its cover. It’s raining cats and dogs. Who let the cat out of the bag?
Metaphor – direct comparison between two dissimilar things.
Example: Her voice was music to my ears. You are my knight in shining armor. Snow covered the streets in a white blanket.
Personification – literary device used to give human characteristics to nonhuman objects.
Example:The palm trees were dancing in the wind. The carved pumpkin smiled at us. The car’s engine coughed its last breath.
Simile – comparison between two unlike things using the word “like” or “as.”
Example: The teenager is as hungry as a wolf. The old man is as wise as an owl. The new dad is as proud as a peacock
Alliteration: the repeated sounds in words to create an effect for the reader
examples: She Sells Sea Shells. Sammy secretly snuck down the silver sliver of hallway.
